Chapter 15

I'd run out of time, finally, and the vampire was going to kill me. Instinctively, protectively, my hand flew up to cover my face. Magnus caught my wrist and stared at me so hard, I could feel the adrenaline soaking my tissues. This was it. I was going to die. I dragged in air like I was drowning.

His eyes had gone red. His fangs extended and glistening in the lamplight as he lowered his face to mine. I shrieked and kicked and spluttered, thinking for sure this was my final moment of breathing. But when his mouth locked on mine instead of dipping to my throat, I froze. This was what Gio had done to me. My tongue ached in memory, then quivered and went slack as he kissed me. The intimate act was nothing like Gio’s. Where Gio had teased me and left me lusting but revolted, Magnus’s kiss was a command, an invitation to obey. It lasted for a heartbeat and yet it took forever.

Almost as quickly as his mouth touched mine, it lifted, and I was alone on the bed. Magnus stood on the other side of the room, Sam’s dead body at his feet. The vampire was trembling the same as I was, but I couldn’t tell if it was from any emotion other than pure rage. He ran his thumb over his mouth the way he'd done when I first saw him. Wiping some woman's blood from his mouth then, wiping the remnants of mine that Gio had left there from his.

I shrank into the bed, blessedly freed from the paralysis. I rolled to my side, pulled my knees up to my chin.

“I told you to use the silver,” he said so low I could barely hear him. “I told you to push it into his skin. Where is it? Where is the chain?”

I pushed my temple into the pillow, wanting this to be a dream, a horrible dream I'd wake from if I caused enough discomfort. But I knew better. This would never be over. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

He began prowling the room, knocking things over, pulling open drawers. Along with the sapping fear and dread, came the stupid concern that I'd end up having to clear upended drawer contents from my floor. Stupid. Foolish thing to worry, especially realizing there was a dead body lying somewhere on my bedroom floor. The image of Sam's feet dangling in the air choked me. I didn't want to think about that. How in the world's fuck was I going to explain that? It was too much.

"Jade?" Magnus growled in query.

I groaned and lifted a finger to point down the hall.

“It’s in the bathroom.”

He whirled toward me. With a scathing look, he strode from my bedroom and disappeared into the tiny cubicle. I heard him upending baskets of personal grooming products. Something crashed against the mirror. He came back out holding the chain from the end of my toothbrush.

He tossed it at me. “Put it on.
